3 Idiots Controversy and Chetan Bhagat
Aamir Khan has lashed out at noted novelist Chetan Bhagat by saying that the writer was using the popularity of the movie to sell more copies of Five Point Someone. The best seller, Five Point Someone is the book on which 3 Idiots is based.
Chetan Bhagat wrote in his blog that he was upset at not being given proper credit for 3 Idiots. His name was put somewhere at the end credits with those of junior artists. The author believes that 70 percent of 3 Idiots is same as Five Point Someone, and he said that he doesnt want anything apart from the fact that he wanted to voice the statement that his fans were hurt.
The author is also perturbed that instead of the makers of 3 Idiots making any statement, Aamir Khan is the only one who is talking. Aamir Khan said, “”I think he (Bhagat) is trying to get publicity to sell more copies of ‘Five Point Someone’. In fact, I told Vinod (producer of the film, Vidhu Vinod Chopra) that he should take him to court as he is maligning both Vinod and Raju (director Raj Kumar Hirani).”
“It’s Abhijat Joshi, who has been working on the script of the film for the last three years. We borrowed the idea from Bhagat’s novel, but frame-to-frame it has no relation with the book. Ask him to pick up a single scene that is similar to the book and then we’ll talk. It’s Joshi’s hard work,.”
Aamir Khan further added, “Chetan Bhagat himself told me that you dont have to read the book because the script of the movie is totally different from the book”
Chetan Bhagat said, ’I told this because I was never given a script in the first place. The makers told me that the movie is totally different from the book. I told Aamir what I was told”
Months ago, Raj Kumar Hiran director of 3 Idiots said, “The idea was originally taken from Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone but when we started working, we realised that we couldn’t really adapt the book, we will have to modify it to shoot a film because the way you write a script for the film is very different from writing a book,” said Hirani.
“In 18 days we had finished the structure of the book. Then to streamline it, do the dialogues, change it and see that everything is woven properly, it took us a year and a half,” he added.

I and my friends strongly disagree with Aamir Khan’s comments over Chetan Bhagat crying for publicity. Chetan is the most loved novelist of the decade and does not require any cheap publicity. His books are much more read and talked about than Aamir’s movies which have a count of 1 per annum with no guarantee of being hit. Anyone who has read ’5 points someone’ can confirm that the movie ’3 idiots’ is fully based on the novel. I fail to understand how come it took 3 years for a script writer to copy a novel and how irresponsible it was of Aamir Khan to give public comments like this for Chetan Bhagat.
Chetan is not at all running for publicity but then no intelligent man can let anyone else take credit of his work.
We are in full support of you Chetan.
Its true Chetan Bhagat should be given the due credit for his awesome novel. Why Aamir Khan is becoming bad guy in real life after performing good guy in the movie. People will start disliking him for such act.
The movie is based on Five Point Someone. They have modified the story to some extent, but while you see the movie, you knw that major portions of the story is actually copied (or you can say inspired) from this book. It ony hurts when Aamir Khan who is my favourite actor makes false statement against Cetan Bhagat, without knowing the actual truth.
