The average age of a Bollywood heroine is 28 while the average age of a Bollywood hero is 44. Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan are above 40, Sanjay Dutt and Anil Kapoor are above 50 and Amitabh Bachchan will turn 70 in two years. Aishwarya Rai, Kareena Kapoor, Rani Mukherjee, Preity Zinta, Shilpa Shetty, Bipasha Basu, Vidya Balan and Lara Dutta are in their 30s while Asin, Priyanka Chopra, Celina Jaitley are in their late 20s.
The sad thing is still once the Bollywood actress turns 35, she is promoted from girlfriend to mom or ‘bhabhi’ or does meaningful roles in parallel films. The only exception is Aishwarya Rai who even in 36 has the best of films like Ravan, Action Replay and Guzaarish.
Contrast this with Hollywood, where female stars in their 40s are the norm rather than the exception. Jennifer Aniston, Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sandra Bullock, Renee Zellweger, Cate Blanchett and Halle Berry are all in their 40s. Meryl Streep is going strong at 60. It’s not just age. Indian audiences seem to like their heroines single. Most top female stars in India are unmarried, with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Kajol are the only two exceptions.
