Badmaash Company Movie Review: Badmaash is Bad-Mash

Badmaash Company is a movie that surprises you with its good script but disappoints you terribly with its weak execution and bad performances. This incidentally is the second con movie from Yash Raj, after its first successful outing in the form of Bunti Aur Babli
Story of Badmaash Company:
Three guys, Shahid Kapoor, Vir Das and Meiyang Chang and a gal, Anushka Sharma are bored of the hypocrisy and the manipulation of the 90s(the movie is set in the early 90s)and decide to become conning experts. Shahid Kapoor’s brain is brimming with his ideas and soon they start working on them. The rest of the movie is ‘silly cons’ as you see one con after the other being pulled
In the middle, there is the usual predictable fare, like one of them getting greedy, the other becoming drunk, the third one falling in love and want to sort his life and the fourth one getting pregnant(Anushka of course). They split because Shahid thinks that he is the man who runs the show and they finally get back together when Shahid realizes his folly after landing in the jail and his uncle’s business in dire straits. They finally decide to get back to business, meaning the con business and do a neat job at this one.
Plus points in Badmaash Company
1. The script is nice and you can make out that Parmeet Sethi has researched well for the subject.
2. The quintessential bikini scene found in Yash Raj movies is there, surprisingly Anushka Sharma has meat compared to other waif girls in their productions; there is the ‘mandatory ‘smooch scene, the scenic locales and virtuous parents.
3. The story is unique
Minus points in Badmaash Company
1. There are many scenes that lengthen the film and the screenplay of the movie is flawed. Things like Anupam Kher’s lecture about ‘bada aadmi’ in the second half, Vir Das’ running in with a gay scene, the Greencard holder scene, the Shahid Kapoor’s losing his money in gambling are boring and stretch the length of the film
2. The movie tries to be cool when it really isn’t. Anushka Sharma has been given dialogues like ‘f-off’ and ‘screw you’ but somehow this lingo doesn’t really gel with what people used to talk in the early 90s in India. The other error in the film is when Shahid Kapoor and Anushka Sharma deliberately delay an order so that the American does not have time to go through the order. That is ridiculous, no one will be careless when it is a big transaction with first time partners.
3. The music is weak and barring for Ayashi, the songs do not impress.
4. Bad performances
5. Exaggerated climax
Performances in Badmaash Company
Chang is expressionless and is better singing and hosting shows. Vir Das looks lost in the film and you can make out his discomfort in some scenes. Shahid Kapoor is inconsistent, he looks restless and uncomfortable in some scenes and he is good in some of them. Anushka Sharma has a good screen presence and manages to overshadow Shahid in some of the scenes. But overall, performance-wise the movie sucks.
Conclusion: Just go through the first three letters of Badmaash Company to know the verdict.
Rating:*1/2 (the half mark goes to the script)
