Blue movie review: Blue’s script is in the red

Blue, probably the most expensive movie in Bollywood has one major leakage: good script.  The producer has spent mega bucks in rich visual appeal and thrilling water stunts, but sadly, the 100 crore movie looks like just another imitation of a B-grade Hollywood action flick. Blame it on the slow pace and weak script.

Story:  Aarav( Akshay Kumar) is a shipping magnate who is living a debonair lifestyle in the Bahamas.  Sagar (Sanjay Dutt) is a person who works for him and Mona (Lara Dutta) is Sagar’s lover interest. Sam(Zayed Khan) is Sagar’s brother who lives on the fast lane, speeding bikes at break neck speed for time-pass.  One such race contest that Sagar has with a powerful criminal (Rahul Dev), puts his life in jeopardy. Though  Sagar wins the race and the interest of Katrina Kaif (special appearance), his life is in mess after he volunteers to work for an assignment  for Rahul Dev.  But Sagar goofs up and Rahul is after his blood and money (read 50 million dollars). The only way out is for big brother Sagar (Sanjay Dutt) to navigate into deep seas and find treasures that are worth 50 million dollars from a ship called ‘Lady in Blue’.  Aarav and Sam boosts  Sagar’s drive to go into the deep and get the treasure; they also accompany him. Somwhere in between, we come to know why Sagar was apprehensive about going to sunken ship for so long.  There is a twist a la Race in the end,  which makes the whole deal a little bit watchable.

Minus points of Blue: While its competitor All the Best has some very good, witty lines,  Blue has perhaps the most mundane and boring lines in films of this caliber.  There are quite a few ‘what is that?’ scenes. How can Lara Dutta say ” stop it, stop it, everything can be resolved by talking ” when there is cross-fire happening from  all sides in the room.  A bigger thing is why Sanjay Dutt keep this  tragic secret buried for so long within his heart, when it wouldn’t have really mattered, if he has said it! The director seems to be butt obsessed, as every woman in the film Lara Dutta, Katrina Kaif and Nicole Kidman have their entry with the camera zooming in on their posterior.  In fact, to emphasize the speed of a bike, a pedestrian’s skirt flies up revealing her undies from behind! A R Rahman shockingly disappoints this time with a not so impressive score, save for ‘Fiqraana track’ . The less said about the background score the better!

Plus points:  We can credit director Anthony D’Souza for coming up with Bollywood’s first under-water film. The underwater scenes are spectacular, the bike chase scene is very good and the Hollywood stunt director James Bomalick, who has directed these stunts, has done a neat job.  Akshay Kumar is the star of Blue, he looks physically fit (as usual) and we can see his commitment and dedication at giving his best shot for Blue especially in the action scenes.  The short tight length of Blue, 1 hour and 57 minutes is a another good point especially since the movie is for the action genre, but it would have been better, if the  first half had some quick editing.  The drop dead Bahamas location makes Blue worth a watch.

Performances and star presence in Blue:  Akshay Kumar is the reason to watch Blue, and if you are looking for sex appeal of the female variety, Lara Dutta has the goods. With a toned body, striking screen presence, Lara Dutta, our desi Megan Fox, looks dazzling and manages to outshine Kylie Minogue in Cheegi Weegi situation. Sanjay Dutt is out of shape and the abdominal fat doesn’t really help. He sleepwalks through the role and gets to mouth some really boring dialogues.  Zayed Khan should stop talking like a sixth standard child and as for expressions, he is saved this time, because most of the time, his head is under the motorbike helmet.

Last few lines about Blue:  It is better to go for a 40 lakh movie with a good script rather than a 100 crore movie with none.  Somehow while watching Blue, you get the feeling that you are watching an extended National Geographic or Discovery Channel footage.
