Cell Phone Etiquette to follow at Work
Cell phone etiquette at work is one area most of us neglect, consciously or otherwise. Imagine a situation at work, when a colleague seating next to you, laughs heartily and loudly while you are working seriously. Wouldn’t you get irritated and disturbed? If your office had a no cell phone policy, it is understandable, but if you are permitted to keep your cell phone, you should follow the following cell phone etiquette that can be helpful:
Avoid being too loud: If people around you make faces or say “Oh not again” the next time your cell phone rings, it means your colleagues are certainly not ecstatic about your phone ringing. For some strange reason, people end up talking louder than normal, while they are on the cell phone. Others like to talk loudly so that they can make an impression on their colleagues about their contacts in influential circles and tom-tom about their achievements. Learn to talk softly, because people around you are busy working.
Keep your cell phone in silent or vibrate mode: Your cell phone ringtone is pleasant to you but may not be for others. Even if the music is universally likeable, its ringing at an odd time can really throw people off-guard, while concentrating at work. If you are in a meeting or doing some important work, turn off your cell phone. You can always leave a voicemail, and get back to your people on your break, during lunch or after work.
Don’t talk while in the loo: This may sound funny, but cell phone etiquette extends to the loo too. The person at the other end may be able to guess through echoed sounds of the closed walls, that you are in the loo. Or the sound of flush may definitely help his or her guessing. Also, you may spend up more time chatting with your friend in the office loo, because it gives you the private space. However, you should know that you may be in there, too long for others’ liking.
Learn to say ‘excuse me’: When you are having lunch with your seniors or your boss and if you get a call, do not receive the call, the way you do. Either disconnect it, or keep it on silent mode. If it is extremely urgent, just tell your boss “Excuse me, I will be back in a moment” and leave the table. Take the call and then apologize for the inconvenience.
