Deccan Chargers has won IPL 2009 by defeating runner-up team Bangalore Royal Challengers in a high adrenalin pumping, tense-ridden match. The match which looked like going either way, finally went to the team with the better nerve-Deccan Chargers. Heartiest congratulations to Deccan Chargers, IPL winner 2009.
We at Kraran had pointed out that Deccan Chargers were favorites to win the IPL 2, in the initial stages and Team Hyderabad proved it beyond belief. The final match between Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers, Bangalore kicked off on a thrilling note, as the umpire Rudi Koertzen set the pace for the game with his baritone to the players and the crowd, “Are you ready?”
Anil Kumble, captain of Royal Challengers, who won the toss elected to bowl first. Before you could say ‘Gilchrist’ Adam was bowled for duck by Anil Kumble in the very first over(second ball to be precise). Andrew Symonds played a short, stellar knock of 33, but it was Gibbs, who played till the end, not out with a cool 53 runs out of 48 balls. Deccan Chargers finally finished the innings with 143-6.
The score did look a wee bit low, and Royal Challengers, Bangalore, with its successive past wins looked poised to beat that score. In fact, in this final match Deccan Chargers were underdogs really as the poll during the match showed Royal Challengers as potential winners of IPL 2. Gilchrist and his men thought otherwise and played the game bang-on with a well-thought strategy.
Royal Challengers had a bit of a wobbly start, with Jacques Kallis going at 16, bowled by R.Singh. Though batsmen like Der Merwe and Ross Taylor dominated the bowling, they were nipped in the bud by Ojha and Symonds respectively. At one point of time, both Royal Challengers and Deccan Charges were running neck to neck and the game seemed to go either way. But Symonds virtually broke the back of Royal Challengers when Ross Taylor was caught by Venugopal. In the very next ball, Symonds had Virat Kohli, stumped by Gilchrist. Royal Challengers, Bangalore were finally all out at 137, seven runs short; as Deccan Chargers marched ahead, winner of IPL 2009.
