Google Buzz is Twitter-like and a Facebook Competitor

Google Buzz, Google’s social media weapon, has decided to join hands with Twitter in order to beat it. Gmail users are finding Google Buzz when they login to their Gmail accounts, so aggressive and in-your-face is their marketing. Google’s social media outing in the name of Orkut was popular in India and Brazil but dint get the reception it needed in US and Western countries. Google Buzz is treading on cautious grounds, since it cannot beat Twitter at this point, it has decided to join it.
Google Buzz will share your Twitter updates with your Buzz followers, however it has not mentioned anything about Facebook Integration. So Twitter is now fully endorsed and supported by Google Buzz and so are Picase, Youtube, Blogger and Flickr. However, Google will automatically collapse those Tweets that are no significant like ‘hi’ and ‘brb’ and put only those tweets that have a good comment flow. You will not be able to tweet using Google Buzz because that could nullify the functionality of Buzz.
In Google Buzz, you can have status updates, pictures, videos and links from your friends. You can ‘like’ these items and comment on them. Buzz will also recommend items that you like depending on your friends’ activity. Though it does sound like Friendfeed, Google Buzz has something that Friend feed never had, before it was taken over by Facebook –a huge user base. The smart, good thing that Google is doing is making Buzz a part of its email service. You will see Google Buzz right below the inbox tab, so strong is its reach that it will be accessed by nearly 200 million unique visitors each month. But the flip side is there are still many non-Gmail users, Google Buzz’s piggy back ride on Gmail wont really influence those users. How many have opened Yahoo email accounts because it added social networking features?
Google Buzz does have the potential to usurp Twitter-there’s no 140 character limit. But it remains to be seen whether Google Buzz is doing the right thing by not integrating with Facebook. Just about everyone has a Facebook profile. The user base of Facebook, the biggest social networking site in the world is 40 milllion, while Twitter has 18 million users. Google had 36 million unique users as of last year. Now Facebook has decided to take on the competition by launching its very own Facebook email service.
