Health Myths and Health Facts
Health Myths are old wives’ tales that do not have a grain of truth in them. However most of us have lapped up on these health myths and some of us even believe them. Here are some health myths exposed and debunked:
1. Sugar makes kids hyperactive: Tests have shown that sugar levels have not shown any behavioral alteration between the kids who had sugar and those who did not.
2. Sugar causes diabetes: Diabetes onset in adults is actually caused by eating too much and not exercising enough.
3. We use only 10 percent of our brains: The truth is we use 60 per cent of our brain while we are asleep.
4. Fat people have slow metabolic rate: The bigger you are, the more calories you can burn because you utilize more energy in carrying your weight around.
5. Reading in the dark can damage your eyesight: The truth is though dim lighting can strain your eyes, the effects are not of a permanent nature.
6.Vitamin C is a cure for cold: Vitamin C helps for growth of white blood cells, but it does not stop you from getting cold. Common cold is not curable, it can only be treated by reducing the symptoms.
7. Your heart stops when you sneeze: Pressure in your chest rises when you inhale and drops when you exhale. So, your heart rate is affected when you sneeze but it does not stop beating.
8. Chocolates give you spots: Acne is triggered by hormones that affect the sebaceous glands, and not diet. An unbalanced diet can make the condition worse but chocolate does not give you acne spots.
9. Shaving causes hair to grow back thicker: The stubble does not have the tapered end of the hair, so the stubble just looks thicker.
10.Pulling out a gray makes lot many gray hair grow in its place: Only one hair can grow per follicle. So plucking a gray hair will simply set you back by one hair, which will grow back anyway.
