How can I get a job abroad?

How can I get a job abroad or how do I explore overseas job opportunities? is a moot question in the minds of people who are looking for a great overseas career. Unfortunately or fortunately, due to the global economic downturn and declining overseas job market, there are plenty of job opportunities in India itself.
Why do you want to work abroad?
People choose to work abroad because:
1. Higher compensation and zero taxes (like in the Middle East)
2. Global exposure can be a very significant value addition to their curriculum vitae
3. Upgrading of skills and global perspective to the field
Now let us look at the overseas job opportunities and see if we can get a good break in these places. Let us also look at the improving job sectors in various parts of the world:
Middle East(Dubai, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia): Oil and gas , health care, hospitality, retail, energy, construction, real estate. Generic functions like HR, sales and accounts are also in demand.
Africa: Oil and gas, healthcare, retail, hospitality, financial services, telecom, financial services, civil and mechanical engineering, CA etc.
Europe: Legal services, public sector, defence, real estate, healthcare and insurance
United States: Environmental engineering, biotechnology, healthcare, information technology, systems analysis, construction, software development
Getting a job in US: Getting a job in US is tough, though not impossible with the tightening of H1-B visa restrictions. Expect hiring in small numbers for highly qualified people for domain specific skills and excellence in a particular niche.
Getting a job in Europe: The situation is similar to that in Europe. They have introduced a new point based immigration system that pay special importance to skills and earning potential. Getting a work permit is tougher in European countries like UK, France, Germany and East European countries
Getting a job in Africa: Even Africa is affected by the downturn economy, hiring is less. The situation is expected to get better by 2010.It is particularly difficult to get jobs in Kenya and Nigeria
Getting a job in the Middle East: The prospect of getting a job in the Middle East has improved since the last four months but things are not as easy as predownturn levels. Things have slowed down specially after the Dubai crisis
Over the years, the fascination for overseas jobs has declined. India is one of the few markets which is growing at a good rate of more than 6 percent. So it makes more sense to look for a job in India because the salary gap between India and other countries abroad has declined particulary in the middle and senior management levels.
Here is how you can get a good job abroad:
1. Verify overseas consultant and recruitment firms. Check whether the consultatnt is registerd and has license form the ministry of overseas Indian affairs to recruit for international projects
2. If you are already visiting a placement agency, find out the experience of other candidates
3. Look for direct employment within the company
4. Find out indepth information about the contact duration, terms and condtions of employment
5. Check with corresponding embasses about the authenticity and past records of the company
6.Research your destination the economy of the country and progress prospects of the field that you are going to.
7. Make sure you get the job contract in your hand before leaving
