How to Get Your Child to Start Exercising
Getting your children to do exercise can be tough. These days we hear a lot of people talking about the good old days when they used to ride their bikes, walk places and spend their holidays playing outdoor games. But they have to accept that the times have changed.
Plus, many schools don’t provide physical education classes anymore and TV and Computer becoming your children’s favourite hobbies have put them at a risk to gain weight. So, how to get your child to start exercising?
- Take a family walk. Encourage your family to take a walk every day after dinner. Even if it is just 20-30 minutes, it can do wonders for your child’s fitness.
- If you provide your children with allowances, give them more money for doing extra home chores. For e.g. mowing the lawn, doing the dishes or sweeping. This will also encourage them to earn their allowances.
- If the child promises that he/she would take the dog for walks if you buy them the animal, then make them stick to their promises.
- If you have a workout routine then also include your children into it. It helps in inculcating workout habits in them from a very young age.
- You need to set the rules in the family well in advance to avoid your child from becoming a couch potato. Make a deal with them that for every two hours of watching TV or surfing web, they have to do physical exercise for one hour. Be liberal in the exercises they choose.
- If it is safe for your children to walk home from school or from bus stop, then let them walk instead of picking them up. If the school is within two mile radius, then you should encourage your children to go school on bicycles.
- Always remember to practice what you preach to your children. If you set good examples for your children, then they are most likely to follow you in their habits. If you don’t exercise, then you can’t expect your child to get excited about exercising either.
