Internet habits of high school children

A survey of online habits of high school children between the ages 12 and 18 were done by Tata Consultancy Services, India’s number one IT solutions provider. Here are the online surfing habits and modern aptitude of high school children in Indian cities.

  • 93 percent of high school students are aware of social networking. You can imagine the potential of this niche for educational websites donning the social media mantle.
  • 63 percent of urban students spend daily one hour online.
  • Orkut and Facebook are the two most visited social networking sites by high school students as well as young adults in India.
  • Believe it or not, high school children prefer reading news online to reading it from newspapers. 46 percent of high school kids in Indian cities refer to the Internet for news, while students who refer to newspapers and television were pegged at 25 percent.
  • 62 percent of high school students in Indian cities have a personal computer. 1 in 4 students own a laptop.
  • Every two of three high school students have their own music players (read mp3s and ipods)
  • IT, MBA and engineering are hot-spot careers for high school students.
  • Media, Entertainment, Event Management, Travel and Tourism are emerging careers.
  • USA and UK are the preferred destinations for high school students to pursue higher studies.
  • High school students in Kolkata are the frequent users of Wikipedia at 31 percent for information reference.

Most of the above findings for Internet activity among high school students in India, is not really surprising, and as this demographic grows up, Internet will be the way to do business.

This is a known fact in the online world that a huge amount of internet going population is from students and this survey confirms that but what is surprising is the level of penetration and this tells that in the future when this demographic grows up it will definitely drive internet’s growth as a transaction medium.
