Know the Software You Download
Whenever you download a software from websites like Softpedia.com, you are allowed to filter your search as freeware, shareware, trial, demo, open source and adware. Here is a quick information guide to know the type of the software you download.
Freeware: These are free software that can be downloaded for free. Though these software can be as good as paid software, you may find these software are not stable. The software may also show advertisements. You must download freeware from trustable websites because there are many fraud websites on the internet that promise to offer free software and the users end up downloading virus or spyware.
Shareware: These are full-version of software that you can try and checkout all the features for a limited period of time. If you like it you can download the full-version by paying. Shareware can be shared with anyone without any fear legal infringment. While advertising shareware software, the software makers may adveritise as “free trial”or “trial version”
Trial: These software are similar to shareware but only thing is you are allowed to access it for a limited period of time. This limited period is known as evaluation period or trial period. If you find the software to be useful once the evaluation period expires, you can download the full-version after paying the fee.
Demo: These software are similar to trial software. Demo software allows you to access only limited feature of the software. If you like the software, you may buy the software. These software are not time-limited.
Open Source: These software are similar to that of freeware. These are developed by volunteer programmers. You can download these software for free. Some feel that these software are not stable and may cause trouble to your computer if you download them from untrustable websites. Users can use, change, and improve the open source software, and redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms, if the source code is maintained.
Adware: These software contain third-party software like a toolbar aimed at generating income. Hence, it also known as ad supported software. However, this third-party software does not effect the functionality of the Adware software you are downloading. Some of the Adwar soft allowusers can skip the installation of third party software while installing the software.
You may also see ads on the software. It may even try to change the homepage and the default search engine of the browser you are using. You may notice installation of third-party software shortcuts on the desktop and start-up menu. Some of the Adware software do not give full access to its features and users may pay for full version.
