Lalit Modi in Tax Trouble: Offices Raided

Lalit Modi’s problems seem to be growing. Just three days after the Twitter drama over the Kochi team with Shashi Tharoor, he seems to be heading for trouble. Even as rumors ran high on Thursday over his survival as the commissioner and chairman of the IPL, Modi had to face intense grilling from tax sleuths. There were raids in his three offices in Mumbai on Thursday evening, the Nirlon house at Prabhadevi, Mumbai(Modi’s business office), the Four Seasons Hotel in Worli that has been his office since IPL 3 started and the BCCI’s fourth floor, which is the IPL office.
While Modi said that is not a raid, a senior BCCI official confirmed that they were raids actually. Even as speculation ran high on Thursday over his survival as the commissioner and chairman of the IPL, Modi had to face intense grilling from tax sleuths. There were raids in his three offices in Mumbai on Thursday evening.
Income tax officials raided the fourth floor of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) office which houses the IPL office.
There was a raid at the Nirlon House at Prabhadevi in Worli, which is Modi’s business office. The sleuths have also raided his room in the Four Seasons Hotel, also in Worli, from where he has been operating since the league started last month.
While Modi said it was merely an inquiry and not a raid, a senior BCCI official confirmed that they were actually raids.
The operation was on till the paper went to press. Modi himself was grilled at Nirlon House. The exact nature of questions is not clear yet, but the inquisition is believed to have gone on for a long time. Sources said Modi’s laptop and several files were seized by the officials. A senior I-T official said the decision on an investigation was taken following the brouhaha involving Modi and Tharoor.
