Mobile Number Portability in India: Rs.19

From January 2010, you can now switch over to another mobile service provider and retain the same number. This functionality also known as Mobile Number Portability, will cost you just Rs. 19 to switch from one service provider to the other, without even changing your mobile number.
India is the world’s fastest telecom market and the cell phone rates are the lowest in the world. 3 G services in India seems to be going great guns too. BSNL India has priced video calling rates, as low as 30 paise per minute.
Mobile Number Portability in India will start from December 31 2009. Apart from changing service providers, you can also change between mobile technologies. So, you can move from CDMA to GSM and vice versa.
Expect a lot of competition between mobile service providers and expect a lot of discounts, plans and possibly, improvement in quality of service. TRAI( Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has said that the MNP or switching charges should not be more than Rs. 19, and operators are free to levy any amount less or equal to this charge.
