Most CEOs Die From Heart Attacks

A new research shows that most CEOs die from heart attacks and high blood pressure. And most of it has nothing to do with lots of work on their head and their alarming schedules, it is more to do with their lifestyles. Heart attacks top the list – the biggest killer worldwide, amongst executives, it accounts for over 60% medicare costs and deaths. Since most CEOs are above 40s, the age also plays a part and if the person is not fit, he or she definitely invites a lot of problems.

A study done by Apollo Hospitals on CEOs in India revealed 10.26% of them had survived a heart attack The study also showed the CEO’s jetsetting lifestyle comes at great cost to personal health: 82.05% were found to be overweight and 76.92% had girths larger than their chests. Also, 51.28% CEOs said they ate at five-star hotels more than twice a week and 51.28% subsisted on a high-fat diet of butter, eggs, cheese etc.

The high calorie intake took its toll on fitness levels: 69.23% were hopelessly unfit. Moreover, in India fitness is still not a priority for most. ‘‘Till now it was seen more as a recreational thing than a necessity. However, many are now realising exercise keeps them alert and active,” says Pranay Dhabhai, COO, Haier India.

But there are also issues with diet that cause heart burns and heart problems. ‘‘They tend to pick up fattening food and have chocolates and cookies in between meetings. This shows up in their low BMR (basic metabolic rate). And they complain of fatigue, stress and loss of energy,” says Dr Sonia Kakkar, senior dietician at Sitaram Bharatia Institute of Science & Research.

Sedentary lifestyles also leave CEOs vulnerable to hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, spondylosis, backaches, digestive disorders, ulcers, sexual dysfunction and insomnia. ‘‘What adds to our problems is that Indians are genetically more prone to some of these diseases,” says Dr Udaya Balasubramanian, director, preventive medicine, Apollo Hospitals. The CEO survey showed 56.41% CEOs taking daily medication for these ailments.

The way to rectify these things is pretty simple. Eat right and exercise. There are some who play tennis while there are quite a few who do yoga But then again, it is a secluded segment.
