Myths and truths about voting

Here are the 3 myths about voting which most of us don’t know:
Myth: The Voter I card is necessary for voting
Reality: A voter’s identification card is asked for in most states during the process of voting, but in the absence of the voting card, you can also provide common documents like the PAN card, driving license, student’s ID card, passport etc accepted by the Election Commission of India as identity proof. To be an eligible voter, you have to make sure that your name is listed in the latest voters list in your constituency.
Myth 2: Voting must be done only form the place of one’s birth or permanent residence
Fact: Nothing can be farther from the truth. As long as you are an Indian citizen and a person who is eligible to vote, you can vote from any place in India. You can vote even if you have been residing at your current place for the last 6 months (and not five years, as people often think), the condition being that you are not registered anywhere else.
Myth 3: No sufficient proof is needed to register as a voter
To register as a voter, the required types of address proof documents are mobile or landlines bills, house lease agreement or your driver’s license. This information is enough for your Booth Level Officer(BLO) to check if you are staying at the same place. The address proof does not have to have your name, just the address where you stay is enough. It does not matter if the house is in the name of your parents, friends or relatives.
