Progeria symptoms and Progeria treatment
Progeria is an extremely rare genetic disorder, characterized by rapid ageing, from childhood. In other words, it is normal human ageing, but happening at thrice the speed in children.
Progeria is also called Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome. Almost all the children afflicted with progeria have a mutation or biological chance on the gene that encodes Lamin A, a protein.
The following are the symptoms of Progeria:
• Narrow, wrinkled or shrunken face
• Baldness
• Dry, scaly, thin skin
• Relatively larger looking size of head, compared to the body
• Greying hair
• Loss of eyebrows or eye lashes
• No teeth, delayed or absence of formation
Progeria, being a very rare disease, has only about 40-45 known cases in the world. This disease cannot be passed from parents to their children because affected kids do not live long enough to have children. But there can be more than one Progeria-affected siblings in a family. A family in India reportedly has five children suffering from Progeria, and two of them are dead.
There is no prevention for Progeria. People who are afflicted by Progeria have a short life span. Ninety percent of patients can survive only till early teens (13 -14 years of age). In rare cases, patients can live up to 30 years. Usually death happens because of stroke or heart failure, due to progressive atherosclerosis.
Treatment for Progeria:
There is no conclusive treatment for Progeria that can be effective. Treatments can only reduce complications like cardiovascular diseases, with a possible heart bypass operation or low-dose medicines. A high-calorie diet can probably prolong the life-span. There is a growth hormone treatment being tested to find out if it can cure progeria.
Progeria in media: Cinema can be an instrument to create awareness and a Bollywood movie called Paa, starring Amitabh Bachchan is being made to create awareness about Progeria in popular culture. Read here to know more.

there have been over 130 cases in the world since 1886, the average life span is around 13 years, but some children have been known to grow into there late teens, anywehre to late twenties, and rare cases can make it to their forties
One of the oldest living progeria patients live in South Africa and recently featured in a music video. Leon Botha… I LOVE SA <3……….
my heart goes out to all the children with progeria, i saw this first on TLC channel and then i saw the indian movie, which was great and i am very happy they made a film about this so that every one can learn about progeria. I pray to god someday they find cure for progeria…..
I’m hoping the best for the outcome of this video. It’s really heartbreaking. There is a Progeria Reaserch PRoject in which treatment trials are taking place to find a cure. There are 73 known cases of progeria world wide. My prayers go out to those families who are dealing with extremely rare and devastating disease.
