Protein Drinks Contain Lead and Other Metals: Consumer Reports
A new study has emerged which states that there are metal contaminants found in protein drinks. Consumer Reports, the US magazine published by Consumer Union has come to the conclusion after having tested 15 drinks that all of the products have at least one sample that is inclusive of harmful ingredients: lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury.
Protein drinks are a good source of easily digestible protein source for low-carb dieters and for high-energy athletes. While serving recommendations can vary from product to product, drinking multiple servings daily may provide considerably more protein than your body requires, and may prevent you from getting other recommended daily requirements from other sources (such as vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables). As multiple servings mean more metal contaminants, having it over a long period of time can be harmful,
There is no system in place for the regulation of protein drinks. The Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA) does not do any reviews prior to products coming on the market and their health claims are not verified or challenged.
