Raajneeti Movie Review: Politically Correct!

Raajneeti is a ruthless, uncompromised look on Indian politics. Prakash Jha who is quite an exponent in making movies that have a political base has come up with a movie that will give a lot of people a voyeuristic treat of what happens in the political backyard. Yes, the film is realistic, all for 3 hours and makes for interesting viewing at most parts. On the lines of Madhur Bhandakar’s Satta and a modern version of Mahabharata and GodFather, Raajneeti makes you realize that the civics that you studied back in school is just hogwash.
Story of Raajneeti: The story is too detailed and aplenty to be restricted in a few lines but all we can say is that it is a story of two political families who are connected by marriage, the next generation however are baying for each other’s blood. You need to watch the movie carefully not because the movie is fast and tells too many things quickly, so be on your toes. And please do not leave your brains back home. The story of Raajneeti covers a gamut of topics that cover the murky waters of politics to its depth.
Plus points of Raajneeti: Prakash Jha is obviously the best man to handle such a topic, which required a good amount of knowledge of the topic. Katrina Kaif had pointed out during one of her interviews, that she got to learn a lot while doing Raajneeti, some thing that even Ranbir agreed. Of course, some of us know way more than what is shown in the movie, but there are many who get to benefit from the ringside view of the Indian political scenario. The dialogues in the movie are sharp and edgy, typical Prakash Jha style.
Minus points of Raajneeti: Raajneeti tends to become a bit clichéd on the secondhalf and some emotional scenes look contrived and filmy. The climax also looked irrelevant from today’s point of view.
Performances in the film: Raajneeti contains some of the career best performances from all actors. Full marks to Prakash Jha for making each one of them give their best. Nana Patekar’s role on the lines of Shakuni Mama is brilliant, the ever reliable Ajay Devgn gets it right once again, Arjun Rampal is getting better and better with every role, this one being his best; Manoj Bajpai shows why he is among the best in the business and Ranbir Kapoor, well, he has given a performance that stands out. The ladies do it nicely as well, Shruti Seth is marvelllous while Katrina Kaif holds your breath, this time by her performance as well her natural captivating look.
Conclusion: Watch Raajneeti even if you are not interested in politics.
