Real Life Ghost Stories in India

It is the season for horror films in Bollywood, Shaapit, Rokk, Hum Tum aur Ghost and the forthcoming Phoonk 2(see Phoonk 2 contest) has sent many tongues wagging about ‘real ghost experiences in one’s life’. Everyone of us has some or the other spooky tale to tell. Ghost incidents in India are quite common as it is in the UK and other countries. In fact, horror and ghost tales are the most interesting and ‘listened to’ subject in the world, more than sex….

Here are some real life ghost experiences:

1.       Vaibhav, a BPO worker tells that seven years ago when he was in college, he was on his way to Borivili, traveling by train. One girl in her late 20s who had alighted the train from Charni Road sat beside them. Just before Bandra station comes, there is a bridge over the Mahim creek over which the train passes.  It was late at 12 in the night. This girl got up from her seat, and Vaibhav thought that she is probably going to get down at Bandra station. But from the corner of his eye, he saw her jumping from train to the waters below. The friends got up alarmed. Two weeks later, he had gone to meet his friends who were going to an acquaintance’s house. Vaibhav saw the same girl’s garlanded photo on the wall. Her brother said that she had died a few years ago.

2.       A 43 year old housewife, who resides in a secluded building in Guntur Village, Andhra Pradesh, says she sometimes hears her dead husband singing outside their voice. When she goes out, there is no one around

3.       In a hospital in South Mumbai, a 19 year old wardboy would sleep in a stuffy room by the  hospital. One night after freshening up, he shut the tap of the bathroom and went to sleep. Few hours later, he heard knocks from inside the bathroom but he thought it is merely his imagination. The knocks persisted, he opened the bathroom and tap was running at full flow. Days later when his friend had gone to sleep there, he ran away as he was thrashed by an invisible force.

4.           A lane near the postmortem house of a South Mumbai hospital is also full of stories. A staff member of the hospital told them that a few years ago, whenever a body was taken for a post-mortem through the lane, ward boys would feel someone blocking the stretcher. “He said that when the ward boys would pool in all their strength and try to push it forward, the entire stretcher would go up at an angle,” says Shenai, adding that the staff member claimed that a woman who had lost her son in an accident had died crying in that lane years ago.
Another person the team interviewed for stories of the hospital said that he had lost his brother after he had a paranormal experience in the same lane. “He said his brother worked in the hospital and was passing through the lane when he felt a tight slap. Soon, he developed a high fever slipped into unconsciousness. He was finally declared dead due to brain haemorrhage,” say the researchers.

5.       In Talwar Camp, a chawl in Mumbai, there are tales of a woman’s ‘payal’ chiming in the ladies loo, even though there is no one there
The supposedly haunted areas in India include Sanjay Van Forest in Delhi, Rajasthan – Alwar / Bhangarh-Ajabgarh – Bhangarh ruins, Pune – Shaniwarwada Fort , Mumbai – Mahim(D’Souza Chawl), Hyderabad – Ramoji Film City, Bombay – Bombay Supreme Court grounds, West Bengal – Kurseong – Dow-Hill Thane – Vrindavan Society etc
