Every second person thinks that her skin is sensitive. The reality is that only a few people in the world actually have sensitive skin, and our skin is harder than we think. Your skin is sensitive if:
- The skin turns red easily
- Gets reactive to insect bites
- Looks blotchy and red most of the time
- Reacts quickly to both heat and cold
Care and Tips for sensitive skin:
1. A simple procedure of cleansing the skin with a non-perfumed cleanser followed by a moisturizing sunscreen during the day and a non-perfumed moisturizer at night is very suitable for sensitive skin. Top and safest brands include Vichy Sunscreen, Fash, Cetaphil Cleanser and Suncros
2. If you have sensitive skin, make sure you seek dermatologist’s advice before seeking beauty treatments. There are some peels tlike lacti-milk that can are good and can actually reduce the sensitivity of the skin.
3. Difference between rosacea and sensitive skin: Rosacea is a skin condition in which there is extreme sensitivity to the skin with damage to the vascular system and overactivity of oil glands. This requires dermatologist’s treatment and intervention.
4. Cut down on spicy food: Spicy foods and MSG can cause allergic reaction in people with Rosacea and sensitive skin. So it is better to avoid inflammatory foods like processed sugar, starch and go for foods in the form of red and orange colored fruits, because they are laden with anti-oxidants. Opt for walnuts, oats and brown rice in your daily diet. Vitamin A and betacarotene can be good supplements for your skin care; check with your doctor before taking them.
- Do not buy waterproof cosmetics: These require a solvent for removal. Solvents are often harsh petrochemicals that irritate sensitive skin and cause severe skin reactions.
- Stop using old cosmetics: Old products like eye-makeup, can spoil or become contaminated. Lipsticks and typical foundations are good for a year, mascara can be used for up to 3 or 4 months and powders and shadows are good up to 2 years. Make sure you wash make-up brushes and sponges regularly.
- Use black liners: Black eyeliners is the least allergic of al colorants used in eye care products
- Do not use liquid liners: use pencil eyeliners and eyebrow fillers as they are wax-based and have less preservatives. Liquid eyeliners have latex, which can cause reaction in latex sensitive individuals.
- Pick up sunscreens that have ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
- Always use skin care products that have no more than 10 ingredients.
- Do a patch test before using any new skin care or hair care product
- Avoid nail paints because nail paint can get transferred to the face and eyes, and cause skin reaction.
- Wash your face three times a day only, not more: Water can be an irritant to the skin also, because it can break the protective shield of the skin by washing away its natural oils from the surface.
