multivitamins

Should I take multivitamins or not? On one hand, there are opinions about taking multivitamins and on the other hand, one reads theories that make a contradictor statement.

The recent trend among people is to fall into the temptation of junk food, leave out nutritious food and pop multivitamins with amazing ease. But surely there is a matter of debate whether you should take vitamins at all, you may unknowingly accumulating increasing toxic levels in the body

Our body needs vitamins and minerals in little but steady quantities for normal growth, function and health. The percentage of vitamins and minerals needed by the body of food is only 2-3% and you can get these micronutrients in the foods we eat.

Remember that these are not intended to be meal replacement., In general, if you’re healthy and eat a variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains , vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, skimmed dairy products and fats minimal, you do not need vitamin supplements.

Is eating multivitamins beneficial?

There is no scientific evidence supporting the benefits of multivitamin use. These may be needed only when the body is actually disadvantaged of the recommended amount. Even till the time a person turns 40, a healthy person does not need any vitamin supplement. But as you get older the body’s normal metabolism reduces. At this point you may need vitamin supplements, for example after the age of 55 years may require a vitamin B complex or calcium.

According to the views of Dr. Eric Rimm, associate professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the School of Public Health at Harvard, USA, if you eat in less than recommended quantities or are chronically stressed, then there may be some benefit from taking a multivitamin. Some people, including women of childbearing age trying to get pregnant, ty may need specific supplements such as folic acid and omega-3 fatty acids.

Why Should You Be Careful About Taking Multivitamins

Vitamins, especially fat soluble like A, D, E and K are stored in the body and if you take these in excess, it can lead to toxicity or hypervitaminosis. Fortunately, excess water soluble vitamins such as B complex and folic acid are washed out in urine.

Excess vitamin D can cause dehydration, vomiting, kidney damage and kidney stones. High amounts of vitamin E are known to lead to high cholesterol and blood problems as vitamin E can act as an anticoagulant. Vitamin toxicity is known to be the reason for problems related to the liver and skin, osteoporosis and even loss of hair. Interestingly, vitamin K may be an effective treatment for the toxicity of vitamins.

Before taking any supplements it is important to consult your doctor if you really need to take it. Try to eat healthfully as possible and regular exercise of course, should be a priority for everyone. Eating a small portion of vegetables that includes just10 percent of their food along with their regular meal is all you need to maintain the requirement of minerals and vitamins in your body. Instead of consuming a processed product as a multivitamin tablet, It is better to eat healthy
