Tagore Paintings Sold for £1.6 million Price
A number of rare paintings of Rabindranath Tagore, who had given them as gifts to British missionary and friend Leonard Elmhirst for his private collection in 1939, sold for a record £ 1.6 million at auction on Tuesday, surpassing the pre-auction estimate of £ 250,000.
The 12 paintings, described as “exceptional” by Sotheby’s, had been in the the collection of the Darlington Hall Trust in Devon, South England, e, established by Elmhirst and his wife Dorothy.
A spokesman for Sotheby’s said the bid was “very competitive” with a painting Tagore – an untitled portrait of a woman fetching £ 313, 250, says it is a record for the artist at auction. The names of the buyers are kept secret.
The sale is part of the Sotheby’s auction of art from South Asia, which together totaled almost $ 5.5 million including of great artists from India, and Syed Haider Raza and Souza Francisco.
There has been concern in India in the auction, art lovers have been trying to seek government intervention to stop it. West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, urging him to take measures to bring the paintings to India.
Elmhirst was closely associated with India, first as a missionary and then as secretary and friend of Tagore, whom he met while studying in the United States modern farming techniques that could be used in India. His experiences in India and the influence of Tagore is said to have shaped his work.
