Telangana State Demands Makes MPs Resign
One day after the central government agreed to form a new Telangana State, conceding to the demands of Telangana Rashtra Samithi, there was a huge political chaos in Andhra Pradesh wtih at least 92 legislators and several MPs from other regions of the state resigning or threatening to quit to protest the “unilateral” decision to divide the state.
About 39 legislators of the ruling Congress, 38 of the main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and 15 of the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) have sent in their resignations to assembly speaker. The Congress MP from Vijayawada, L. Rajagopal, was the first to send his resignation. Another MP, R. Sambasiva Rao, has also resigned. At least two other Congress MPs have also offered to quit.
Many legislators, who either resigned or offered to resign, said they did not wish to support resolution to be tabled in the assembly for formation of Telangana state.
Chief minister K. Rosaiah, who come from Andhra region, said the resignations of legislators were true to “some extent” but did not divulge the numbers. He advised legislators and MPs not to act haste and said that the state would not be divided.
TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu, who hails from Rayalaseema, blamed the Congress for the crisis. Congress president Sonia Gandhi held an emergency meeting of party MPs from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions in New Delhi Thursday evening, it is reported.
