Test Your Bone Health

Have you got your bone checked? Do you want to know if your bone is really healthy? If you have not checked, then you need to get your bone density checked through Dual Energy X-ray Absorbitometry (DEXA) scan.
DEXA scan is the best way to determine bone mineral density in its early stages, helps find out the risk of fractures and keeps a close watch on changes in the bone structure. DEXA, the best way to test the strength and density of bone, is a non-invasive, painless procedure that measures bone density in the hip and lumbar spine. To rule out secondary causes, those with suspected osteoporosis should go through laboratory investigations like the complete metabolic panel, blood count, thyroid and parathyroid test among others.
So, do a bone mineral density test if:
1. Your X-ray reveals low bone mass
2. Your menopause begins before 45 and you are not on estrogen
3. You are a post-menopausal woman with one or more osteoporosis risk factors, like fracture
4. You have hyperthyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes.
5. You have a family history of osteoporosis
6. You have been taking steroids regularly
