Yahoo! said that it will close its GeoCities service that provides people a free online locale for home pages.

Yahoo’s decision to do so is this reason “”As part of Yahoo!’s ongoing effort to build products and services that deliver the best possible experiences for consumers and results for advertisers, we are increasing investment in some areas while scaling back in others.”
GeoCities, a web hosting service was founded in 1994 as Beverly Hills Internet. Yahoo had bought GeoCities for more than 3 billion dollars during the height of the Silicon valley boom. GeoCities helped people with tools to build interactive websites and in due course added chat forums and other interactive features. A notice at GeoCities on Thursday said it is no longer accepting new accounts.
As GeoCities was now a loss making proposition, Yahoo! added fee premium services so that it could make money. But that proved to be another jolt.
The recently discontinued services of Yahoo are:
Farechase, My Web, Audio Search, Pets, Live, Kickstart, Briefcase and Yahoo! for Teachers
